Winter Newsletter: 2025, 2015, 2005, 1995

Winter Newsletter: 2025, 2015, 2005, 1995

The Blue Ribbon Foundation kicks off each year with gratitude for our donors. While we strive to thank our supporters year-round, the start of a new year is a special time to reflect on what we appreciate most - you!

Each Winter Newsletter features the Roll of Donors. Due to space limitations in a printed newsletter, we honor supporters who have contributed a combined total of $1,000 or more since 1993. We sincerely value every gift, no matter the amount. Each dollar donated to the Blue Ribbon Foundation plays a vital role in helping us achieve our goals.

What’s new with the Blue Ribbon Foundation as we start 2025?
• Fundraising is underway for the Variety Star Playground. We are excited to provide a new all-inclusive playground that families will be able to enjoy during the Iowa State Fair and throughout the year.
• Highlighted is a project update for the Back the Barns campaign, including plans for the Horse Barn renovation. Some updates to the Earth Home were also completed in the fall.
• Donor Profile – Bob’s Septic: Not only does Bob’s Septic provide equipment during the Iowa State Fair, they financially support the Blue Ribbon Foundation. We are proud to partner with a company that believes in our mission.

So, what was happening 10 years ago?
• Development plans were underway for the new MidAmerican Energy Stage.
• The Blue Ribbon Foundation celebrated the success of the 8th Fairgrounds 5K. The event raised $12,000.
• A new giving program was created, Courtyard of Celebration. Fairgoers could have an engraved paver in the Patty & Jim Cownie Cultural Center courtyard. This program is still available today.
• Donor Profile – Bob & Cherie Shreck: As lifelong Fairgoers, the couple enjoys the food, entertainment and camping at the Iowa State Fair. Most of all, they enjoy spending time with their family each year. Bob and Cherie choose to support the Blue Ribbon Foundation so the next generation can enjoy it as much as they do.

And what was happening 20 years ago?
• Ronald and Margaret Kenyon contributed $400,000 helping complete a new museum exhibit.
• Fair lovers were reminded of the March 31 deadline to have their giving program orders complete to guarantee placement for the 2005 Fair. (This is the same deadline we follow today, so get those donations in!)
• Donor Profile – Pella Corporation: With support of the Corndog Kickoff, engraved bricks and the creation of Pella Plaza, the Iowa company has contributed to the Blue Ribbon Foundation since 1993. Pella Corporation will celebrate 100 years as company in 2025. Look for a few updates to Pella Plaza during this year’s Iowa State Fair.

Oh my goodness, how could it be - 30 years ago?
• Executive Director, John Putney, was celebrating the Blue Ribbon Foundation’s success in the organization’s first two years but also acknowledging, “there are miles and miles to go” to complete the needed renovations to improving the historic Fairgrounds.
• The Foundation was looking for input on the next lapel pin design. Who has a complete set?
• Work was being done of the Administration Building’s foundation and porch. Crews were reconstructing the cattle tie-outs and work was starting on the brand new Service Center.
• Staff were stretching donor dollars by using the gifts as matching funds for grants. While you may not think that your $25 or $100 contribution makes a big difference, grant funding wouldn’t be possible without them.
• Donor Profile – Floyd and LaVonne Peters: The Peters family not only purchased an engraved brick for every member of their family but encouraged 14 other families in their hometown of Bellevue to do the same. This is just one example of how families across the state can show support for Fairgrounds improvements.

Over the years, programs have expanded, new projects have progressed, and much has evolved. Yet, the unwavering support of Blue Ribbon Foundation donors continues to grow. Thank you for being a part of our journey!
