Horse Barn History
Some horse watchers know as much as the riders. Others rarely see a horse, so ask lots of questions. And it they’re lucky, they get to give one a pat before they move on to the rest of the Fair!
The book, Our State Fair – Iowa’s Blue Ribbon Story, showcases “Those Beauties” in the Ag Extravaganza chapter.
Which side are you on? Do you know your horse breeds? Have you ever rode a horse? Even if you have never been around horses, walking through the Horse Barn during the Iowa State Fair is a "must-do".
Built in 1907, with additions in 1909, 1912 and 1929, the two-acre Horse Barn is a staple on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Often used in conjunction with the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center, the majestic two-acre, 12-aisle Horse Barn is completely enclosed. One of its best features is its prime location, directly connected to the warm-up arena of the Jacobson Exhibition Center.
Over the last 100 years, the barn has received needed maintenance and upkeep (roof replacement, brick repair, etc.) But after enduring several decades of harsh Iowa weather and high usage throughout the year, it’s time for an overhaul. The Blue Ribbon Foundation’s Back the Barns fundraising campaign is in full swing to give new life to the livestock barns.
The Horse Barn is currently under construction. Phase one of the project (exterior painting, window replacement, masonry repairs, and north restroom renovation and construction) will occur prior to the 2025 Iowa State Fair. Phase two (concrete floor with radiant heat, relocated offices, interior wash rack area, portable stalls, fire suppression system and enhanced ventilation) will begin this fall and be completed in time for the 2026 Iowa State Fair.
Horses have always been part of the Iowa State Fair, although they didn’t officially prance in front of judges until the fourth Fair in 1858. Even so, those beautiful animals have forever enthralled Fairgoers. Today, thousands of us wander through the Horse Barn just to look.
If you find yourself exploring the Horse Barn, watching the 6-Horse Hitch competition or admiring the hard work put into preparing these animals – consider giving a donation toward the renovation. Thank you.
